Milhom, biliom e outras grandes quantidades em galego
Gostaria de saber se bilhão é mais informal do que bilião, mas continuarei a usar biliom (milhom de milhons).

RESPOSTA DA COMISSOM LINGÜÍSTICA DA AEG:
Bilhão (= Gz. bilhom) e bilião (= Gz. biliom) som variantes de umha mesma palavra galego-portuguesa, que deriva da francesa billion. No galego-português de Portugal, é mais freqüente a variante bilião do que bilhão; no galego-português do Brasil, mais freqüente é a variante bilhão. Ainda que a quantidade de um milhar de milhares (106) se refira em galego-português com a forma única milhão (= Gz. milhom), derivada do italiano milione e influenciada por milhar, já para denotarmos 1012, é mais recomendável a variante biliom (e triliom para denotarmos 1018, etc.), por três causas: primeiro, porque a forma biliom é mais próxima do étimo billion (voz francesa); segundo, porque a forma biliom harmoniza com os cultismos, livres de variaçom, milionário, bilionário, etc., e, terceiro, porque bilião é a variante mais freqüente, de longe, em Portugal, enquanto mais rara no Brasil, e, no caso de divergência vocabular entre Portugal e o Brasil, é o galego-português de Portugal, e nom o do Brasil, que se revela, por maior proximidade, como fonte preferente de neologismos para combatermos em galego a estagnaçom e a suplência castelhanizante padecidas polo léxico galego (v. O Modelo Lexical Galego, da Comissom Lingüística), preferência, esta, que aqui fica patentemente justificada, porque no Brasil bilhão (~ bilião) denota mil milhons, significado nom pertinente na Galiza, mas bilião (~ bilhão) em Portugal denota um milhom de milhons, significado si pertinente para a Galiza.
